Boesenbergia rotunda is a commonly grown food plant in Thailand and surrounding southeast asian countries. Unlike many other edible gingers its the starchy storage roots not rhizomes that are eaten. In Thailand this plant is ‘Krachai,’ not to be confused with Krachai Dom which is Kaempferia parviflora. The commonly grown crop plant a green leaf cultivar that grows to 1.5 feet. In the wild this species is very diverse coming in many sizes and sometimes has red undersides to the leaves. Even rarer are silver striped cultivars. The plants we offer are the standard cooking type and have proven to be quite reliable USDA Zone 8. It is a good clumper but not aggressive at all. The flowers are small but beautiful, though this should mainly be grown for its foliage and culinary uses.
