The new standard for Tulip Gingers and now one of the most loved gingers in the US!!
‘Siam Shadow’ is part of a series of 12 or so ‘Tulip Gingers’ bred and owned K.P. Holland . (Note: we had previously incorrectly listed Chaingmai University as the hybridizer). Although this is mostly a Curcuma alismatifolia line there are a few that are actually hybrids with other related species. This one in particular is a Curcuma alismatifolia X Curcuma rhabdota cross (presumed parentage). This cross has many different looks but I’ve found that the ones that have Curcuma rhabdota like foliage do exceptionally well in southern gardens. They tend to prefer more shade than typical Tulip Gingers and offer a different look as well. With anything called Tulip Ginger, the blooms are on long thin strong stems with the bloom boldly displayed above the foliage. They make great cut flowers, can be grown as pot plants, and also make excellent landscape plants both as individual clumps and in mass plantings.
‘Siam Shadow’ was one of the first of this series to really make a splash in the south and is often found in larger retail chains in summer. Unfortunately the growers and stores never label these correctly and are somewhat clueless about its parentage and growing needs. It has been tested in Zone 8 for a few years and has proven quite reliable.
Grows to 1.5 feet in medium sun
