Kaempferia champasakenis is a very rare species from the Champasak Province of Laos. It was described in 2008 and is still unknown among most Peacock Ginger enthusiasts. This species is exclusively available from Gingerwood Nursery and until now was only occasionally offered at local sales and at some of my talks. These plants were propagated from stock originally discovered on the same mountain as the incredibly rare and beautiful Boesenbergia bella. In the same habitat another rare Kaempferia can be found, K. gigantiphylla. It is a beautiful area with many other gingers such as Gagnepainia, Boesenbergia, and the bizarre Zingiber peltatum.
Kaempferia champasakenis is a beautiful and easy to grow species with large white flowers. This form is listed as the grey leaf form as I had collected a few other similar plants that were thought to be the same species. These are most likely different species including the just recently described Kaempferia pascuorum. As with most Kaempferia this species prefers a shady location in the garden and also does well as a potted plant. It has grey/silver leaves that can get 4″x8″ in size at full maturity.
Grows to 5″ tall in shade, hardy in USDA Zones 8 and higher.
