Although this species has been grown in the US for decades it is still one of the lesser known of the spring bloomers. It is equally hardy and reliable as the Giant Plume Ginger (Curcuma elata) but has a shorter stature and unique bloom color. This species also has a wide range of acceptable light conditions from bright shade to full sun. We find with most of these and related species their blooming is lessened in shade even when the clumps grow fine. Spring bloomers rely on food stored throughout the growing season, and ones in sunnier spots are consistently “fed” better. This is a great landscaper whose stems are colored and its large leaves are striped red as well. Foliage makes good background filler for cut flower arrangements. The flower stems are short so not suitable as cuts. They tend to mass flower and still create a good show.
Grows to 4 to 5 feet in bright shade to medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above (possibly Zone 7)
