This is one of the pure Curcuma alismatifolia cultivars of Tulip Gingers in the ‘Siam’ series. The Siam Series was bred and owned K.P. Holland . (Note: we had previously incorrectly listed Chaingmai University as the hybridizer). These are bred for disease resistance, ease and quickness of growth and blooming habit. The color range of the series is great and it seems that most are better performers than older varieties of Tulip Ginger. With this species a well drained and sunny area is important. Typically they are hit or miss in the landscapes throughout the south and not as reliable as the Tulip Ginger hybrids with Curcuma rhabdota. That said we recommend them for pot culture as its very easy to store the pots dry over winter and this guarantees year after year of success. Many people do have success with these in the landscape, and these newer varieties seem to come back better. We recommend keeping a few in pots or lifting rhizomes over winter but leaving some in landscape to trial.
