One of my all time favorites for many reasons. This one of the first gingers I ever had, its incredible easy, makes a reliable showing every spring of huge hot pink blooms, is very cold hardy, and makes an impressive landscape plant. Belongs to both the spring blooming group (flowers before foliage emerges) and the branching rhizome group. For most regions in the gulf south of the US this is almost always in bloom on Mother’s Day. Sprouting can vary depending on region, spring temperatures, and location in the yard. Plants grown in sunnier locations or next to a house will sprout faster than those in shade. This almost bulletproof plant can be grown from bright shade to full sun (with adequate water). It is one of the tallest Curcuma species easily reaching 6 feet. It also has one of the largest inflorescences of the spring bloomers. For some strange reason people sometimes refer to this as Hidden Ginger despite the fact that when it blooms all you see is a sea of hot pink on the ground and no leaves! Makes a great cut flower and a life saver on Mother’s Day if you forget to order roses…
Grows 6-8 feet in medium sun (can take shadier and full sun locations). Hardy in Zone 8 and above, some report success in Zone 7 as well.
