This beautiful shade ginger is sometimes referred to a variety of Globba winitii (Mauve Dancing Girl Ginger), and occasionally Globba magnifica (White Dragon). It is reported to have originated in Burma. It is a great shade plant that grows to 1.5 feet and produces a HUGE pendant inflorescence of lavender/purple bracts. These bracts are larger than most other species and the entire size of the inflor. is massive. Like Globba winitii, this species is a very long lasting cut flower. It can last weeks in a vase, even longer on the plant. It is hardy in USDA zones 8-10 and prefers a well drained shady area.
Although some Thai researchers had referred to this as Globba williamsiana it was an unpublished name until late 2020. We are happy to report this beautiful cultivar is now officially Globba williamsiana. Other cultivars of Globba also fall into this newly published species such as ‘Pink Firecracker.’ Please note these are sometimes mislabeled under a completely made up name, Globba grandiflora.
