This amazing Butterfly Ginger was first introduced by Gingerwood Nursery after many fruitless years attempting to find it. It took some effort and money to finally get it into the US but it was worth it. Originally the few people that had this plant where incorrectly calling it Hedychium marginatum (a valid, but very different species). Once introduced to the US and now elsewhere as Hedychium rubrum researchers in India had uncovered the true identify of a little known species, Hedychium deceptum. As it turns out this earlier name is the correct name for this beautiful glowing red butterfly ginger. We strive to keep up with the world of taxonomy but also want to make sure people don’t end up buying the same thing twice! If you bought Hedychium rubrum from us realize this is the same plant. Now back to this beauty. Short, beautiful foliage, colored bracts, and glowing TRUE red flowers, and red bracts! And if that wasn’t enough its cold hardy and the first to bloom in my area at least. It resembles Hedychium greenii and was thought to be closely related but genetic research has shown they aren’t even that closely related. It prefers a bright shade to medium sun area.
Grows 3-4 feet in bright shade to medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above
