Curcuma sp. ‘Snowdrift’ – Despite having the original ‘Emperor’ first, and long before any others, mine never sported more variegated plants. Richard O’Brien (formerly of Gingerland Nursery) discovered this sport and placed it into production. After I started growing this new cultivar and over 20 years after introducing ‘Emperor’ one of mine sported creating the same awesome variegation.. .. even plants can have a cruel cruel sense of humor unfortunately. The growth of ‘Snowdrift’ is a bit slower than ‘Emperor’ which is a plus to many. The foliage is unbelievable, and a true standout in the landscape. While some have success in full sun, I recommend a bright filtered shade area. The intense variegation can burn more easily in bright sun especially if not kept well watered. The blooms and other features, hardiness etc. is the same as ‘Emperor.’ Adding these leaves to an arrangement of flowers makes a dramatic and beautiful show. Grows to 3 feet in bright shade / medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above.
Arrangment in photo shows the dramatic look of Curcuma ‘Snowdrift’ along with the blooms of the ‘Mango Ginger’ Curcuma amada.
