The official name for this great hybrid is Curcuma hybrid Royal Thai ‘Thai Garnet.’ It was sold for a time under a new name of Purple Flash and part of the “Torch” series. Unlike the better known varieties in that series this appears to be a Curcuma petiolata x C. plicata hybrid. The plicata parent provides purples and other shades of red not found easily in Curcuma. ‘Thai Garnet’ and its sister hybrid ‘Sweet Rosy’ are a little shorter with smaller leaves than the other four “Torch” hybrids available (Manee Siam, Ban Rai Red, etc). They do well in bright filtered shade to medium sun and can take direct sun for a few hours as well. A very hard to find hybrid and we remained sold out all of last year. Happy to have enough to offer again.
Grows to 1.5′ in filtered shade to medium sun, hardy in Zone 8 and higher.
Note: Garnet is used in the names of three DIFFERENT hybrid Curcuma. ‘Garnet’ is an American hybrid released a few years ago but no longer in production. ‘Thai Garnet’ is a hybrid developed at Chaing Mai University, and Sawadee ‘Garnet’ was developed at Maejo University in Thailand. Due to the Sawadee part being a series name, there are in fact two hybrids called Garnet.
