This is another great large sized spring blooming species. It can get as tall as Curcuma elata (Giant Plume Ginger) but has just slightly more narrow leaves (still BIG!) with a darker maroon midrib. It blooms in late spring, almost always around Mother’s Day in most areas. The stems of the plant and bloom have some reddish brown coloration added to the landscape value. Its blooms have a long enough stem to make good cut flowers and these contrast well against the solid pink Curcuma elata. The blooms of Curcuma ornata are white and tipped with a softer pink. It is very easy and quite hardy.
Grows 6-8 feet in medium sun (shadier and sunnier spots as well). Hardy in Zone 8 and above, some have success in Zone 7 as well.
