Growing plants will be restocked in spring of 2023
Alpinia galanga is sometimes referred to as just ‘Galanga,’ ‘Greater galangale,’ ‘Laos Root’ and by many regional names throughout SE Asia. It is one of the premier spice/edible plants in the ginger family. It is a common ingredient in Thai food as well as in neighboring countries. It’s rhizomes are the source of the flavoring but unlike the common edible ginger (Zingiber officinale) it is an evergreen species and does not have a set harvest time. It has a few very positive unusual features. To start it is one of the few edible gingers that is actually quite attractive in the landscape. Also, for those of us in the Southern USA or anywhere with regular winter freezes this is one of just a couple Alpinia that will bloom every summer! They do not need to be up 16 months like Shell Ginger and most others. The foliage grows to 6 feet and is wide with a textured leaf which adds to it’s landscape appeal. Every summer it makes a long spike with many small white flowers with red markings. It is very reliable in Zone 8 and higher. Plants prefer medium sun but can handle full sun with adequate watering.
