Kaempferia larsenii is a quite common in parts of eastern Thailand as a narrow green leaf form that frequents sandstone areas. Much rarer forms such as this one can be found in other areas but nowhere near the numbers of the common form. This variety is a beautiful one, and probably the only Kaempferia with multiple red striping (1 central red stripe is a common feature in a few species). The contrast of the red leaves and lavender bloom is quite beautiful. This species has not been tested in the ground for hardiness yet but should have the same Zone 8 hardiness as most species as long as it is grown in well drained soil. In is quite happy in pot culture, doing well in a 4″ to 6″ pot. Limited and rare.
Named after Kai Larsen, a Danish Botanist and author of the book ‘Gingers of Thailand.’ He was very influential in Thai ginger taxonomy and had discovered and named numerous species.
Grows to 4″ tall in shade. Hardy in USDA Zones 8 -10.
