Kaempferia filifolia is one of the most unique and very unusual species. It is nothing like your typical Peacock Ginger! This species is common in sandstone washouts in eastern thailand but often goes unnoticed. The foliage is grass like and allow the flowers are among the largest in the genus they only start opening at dusk. The very narrow leaves allow this species to colonize open, very sunny areas which is not the normal habitat for Kaempferia. The few collectors in the US that have tried this species early on did not have much luck as traditional conditions just aren’t good for this species. A sunnier spot for potted plants is needed as well as a very well drained soil (a potting mix with extra perlite works very well). This species falls in the collectors category and should not be the first Kaempferia one grows, it is however much easier to grow and bloom than previously thought.
Grows to 4″ in medium to full sun, hardiness has not been tested yet.
