Hedychium thrysiforme – ‘White Pincushion Ginger’ or ‘Frilly White Butterfly Ginger’
Hedychium thrysiforme is a reliable and beautiful species that has been grown in the south for decades but is still one of the lesser known Butterfly Gingers. It tends to be a fall bloomer, offering a beautiful show of many small white flowers. The look is very different than that of the common White butterfly ginger and numerous hybrids. The foliage is also unique having dark rippled texture leaves that add to its beauty. It is fragrant though not as strong as Hedychium coronarium. Recently hybrids have been created using this as a parent and the results are a welcome departure from the overdone crosses that have dominated the scence for years. Grows 4-5 feet in medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above.
