This beautiful, as yet unidentified species, Butterfly Ginger was introduced at the same time as our exclusive ‘Red Butterfly’ (Hedychium deceptum). It too is native to Manipur in Northeast India. Unfortunately it has taken much longer to build enough stock on this beauty to offer it. This is quite possibly a new species as it does not fit well with any of the known yellow flowered species. ‘Manipur Gold’ is an easy to grow any rewarding species that has proven quite hardy in USDA Zone 8 for several years. The foliage is a lush dark green and borne on a dark reddish brown stem. It blooms easily in a medium sun location and grows 4-5′ tall. The flowers are huge, yellow with an orange center, and fragrant. The first offering on this exciting new and exclusive Butterfly Ginger was done through our newsletter (The Gingerwood Ginger Gazette) but is now available in limited numbers here.
Grows to 4-5′ tall in medium sun, hardy in USDA Zones 8 and above.
