Hedychium gracile is a unique dwarf butterfly ginger with a beautiful spray of white flowers. It only grows from 2-3 feet and has a more densely clumping habit then many others “Butterflies.” It is sweetly fragrant in the evening and has a look like no other. Very hard to find in the US but cold hardy in Zone 8. Unlike the majority of Hedychium species and hybrids in cultivation, this one belongs to the group with natural dormancies. In fall it will drop its foliage and go dormant until the spring. Fortunately it sprouts a bit earlier than many other deciduous gingers.
Grows to 3′ in filtered shade to medium sun. Hardy in Zones 8 and above.
