This beautiful form of Hedychium coccineum was introduced by the late ginger collector Mark Collins. In recent years this variety seems to be labeled as ‘Palani.’ From discussions with Mark in the past, ‘Palani’ was a hybrid he obtained in Hawaii and gave it its trade name. I obtained this form of Hedychium coccineum from him and was told it had been discovered in either Nepal or Bhutan. What was ‘Palani’ doesn’t seem to be available anywhere so effectively now both ‘Palani’ and the form I sell are the same. This cultivar is similar to ‘Disney’ but is taller and has a slight arching habit which is very attractive. The individual flowers are larger and a richer orange color. The bracts and inflorescence also have red coloration, another added benefit. It is still quite rare in the trade and in gardens but has proven very reliable for many years.
Grows to 6 feet in medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above
