For many years the species of Globba that produced bulbils were limited to the Yellow Dancing Girl ginger (Globba schomburgkii) and the Purple Globe (Globba globulifera). There were many lesser known species but most were not show stopping ornamentals. The species with beautiful pendant blooms such as the Mauve Dancing Girl ginger (Globba winitii) don’t make bulbils and they were often difficult to propagate. In recent years several showy pendent types that DO make bulbils have been discovered. We’ve been working hard to get as many like this as possible and Globba sp ‘Perfect Purple’ is absolutely one of the best to be found! Globba sp. ‘Perfect Purple’ has long pendant inflorescences with light purple bracts and yellow flowers. To make it even more desirable the foliage is dark purple underneath. This stunning species grows to 1.5 feet and prefers shade as most Globba do. In has not been tested for cold hardiness yet but should do fine in USDA Zone 8 and higher. For those wishing to propagate via bulbils it is best to harvest them in the fall when they are easily removed from a light touch. They should be stored indoors and sown in the following spring. In the garden bulbils will fall on their own and typically sprout at the same time the mother plants do. This species is easily grown in pots and is a tight clumper. A 6″ to 1gal pot is perfect for them. There are numerous undescribed new species of Globba in the wild but we have a feeling this may be a natural hybrid and we have two other similar collections that will be released in the future. This is a Gingerwood Nursery introduction and exclusive.
Grows to 1.5′ in shade, hardy in USDA Zone 8 and above.
