Curcuma sparganifolia is one of the species of “Tulip Ginger” and often used for creating hybrids. This particular cultivar is the most intensely colored of the species with vivid maroon bracts and almost black looking dark green tips. ‘Siam Ruby’ has been offered before at our rhizome sales but this is the first time it has been listed on the website. It is a miniature species with narrow leaves but with typical “Tulip Ginger” form having its inflorescence well above the foliage. A good choice for container growing due to its compact clumping habit and small size. For those interested in making Curcuma hybrids pure species varieties such as this are needed as hybrid varieties are unfortunately seed sterile. Proper drainage over winter is a needed for all deciduous gingers but is especially important for ones like this with small rhizome systems. If growing in the ground choice a sunny well drained location.
Grows to 12″ in medium to full sun, hardy in Zone 8 and above
