Costus productus ‘Orange Tulip’ is the original cultivar of Costus productus. Originally it was grown under the name of Costus curvibracteatus. The true Costus curvibracteatus is a beautiful species with many variations… all of which seem very difficult to grow outside of the tropics!! Costus productus on the other hand is very… well, productive. This dwarf species is a free flowering type (does not rely on short days or long days to bloom). It is quick to bloom and will even bloom in a 1 gal size pot. It multiplies well and is a good cutflower. For those interested in the amazing potential of Costus hybridizing, Costus productus is a great parent. It is the mother of two of the best known hybrids in the world, ‘Phoenix’ and ‘Green Mountain.’ The free flowering habit and compact size are two essential characteristics that most hybridizers want in their creations.
Grows 2-3’ tall in filtered shade. Hardy in Zones 9b and higher (not recommended for regions with regular winter frosts/freezes).
