Kaempferia pulchra ‘Mason’ is the most widely grown cultivar of this species in the world. It most likely originated in peninsular Thailand, but is cultivated throughout the world. This particular cultivar was brought to the west via the Philippines where it was being cultivated. It was unofficially named after the man that introduced it, Mason. This unfortunately was accepted in horticulture as its scientific name. With no valid reference, this was also grown with the spelling mansonii. To correct these issues we have grown this as Kaempferia pulchra ‘Mason,’ retaining both the true name while keeping the homage to its introducer.
‘Mason’ is an extremely easy Peacock Ginger to grow. It makes a good shade groundcover and is especially attractive in the beginning of the season when its “plumage” is at its best. For several weeks it produces attractive lavender, African Violet like, flowers. It grows to 6 inches in shade. Hardy in Zone 8 and above.
