This hybrid was introduced to market by Gingerwood Nursery, and originally distributed throughout Louisiana. We think the renamed hybrid ‘Ayo’ is really this plant, so for practical purposes if you have one you really don’t need the other. Now the name ‘Vi’ is short for Violet, not the the roman numeral and not related to the hybrid ‘Pink V’ (we won’t go into what that stands for!). ‘Vi’ was named after Baton Rouge (and worldwide) Camellia legend Violet Stone. Her home was a block from my school and I would often walk there to visit. She had a few beds full of Hedychium hybrids that came from her friend who had some of the original Japanese Hedychium hybrids. Hers were, however, grown from seed and therefore all new hybrids. I particularly liked this one for its super free blooming habit and nice inflorescence. Seemed only fair to name it after such a wonderful woman. Violet Stone has since past but her collection of Camellias have been planted throughout the Burden Research Station in Baton Rouge and are on public display along with a ginger garden and much more.
Grows 6-7 feet in medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above.
