Curcuma rhabdota is hands down one of the most beautiful gingers in the world but surprising very difficult to find now! It has been used in breeding programs with Curcuma alismatifolia (Tulip Ginger) to make several exciting hybrids but the pure species is almost never offered. Unlike some on its Tulip Ginger group relatives, this species is better adapted to ground cultivation in the southern US and its textured leaves are not prone to some of the rusts and other problems some Tulip Gingers can have. ‘Candy Cane’ is a trade name and common name for this species not so much a pure cultivar. The ‘Candy Cane’ types have round rippled leaves and have a beautiful red and white striped inflorescence held above the foliage. It prefers a more shady location than the Tulip Ginger. Due to the small size it is well suited to pot culture in addition to making a nice smaller size landscape plant. We have a small amount of these to offer but hopefully can increase stock in coming seasons to keep this beauty available!
Grows 1 foot in bright shade/medium sun. Hardy in USDA Zone 8 and above
