In the grand scheme of things there really are not that many ginger hybrids out there compared to other major plant families… so you’d think people could be a little more creative with their naming. Curcuma hybrid Sawasdee ‘Garnet’ is the third Curcuma hybrid to be called Garnet. There is an American hybrid Curcuma hyb. ‘Garnet,’ a hybrid developed at Chaingmai University called Curcuma hyb. ‘Thai Garnet,’ and now this one also developed in Thailand. All three are beautiful but come from different parentage and would not be mistaken by their looks, only the name. Since “Sawasdee” is the trademarked series name its not really the hybrid name so now we have two ‘Garnet’s and one ‘Thai Garnet.’ Small rant aside, this appears to be the longest inflorescence of the red Sawasdee hybrids yet on a relatively short plant. It should prove hardy in USDA Zones 8 and above. Grows to 1.5′ in medium sun.
