Growing plants will be available for order late spring/early summer 2023
Costus hybrid ‘Moonluster’ is a hybrid by Dave Skinner between Costus scaber ‘Belize Yellow’ and Costus guanaiensis ‘Sweet Charlotte.’ The ‘Belize Yellow’ parent adds cold hardiness and the light red undersides to the leaves. The dwarf ‘Sweet Charlotte’ adds an extra stoutness to this hybrid and a bit larger flower. This hybrid has been a top notch performer in my garden, bouncing back from unexpected late freezes with ease. The overall foliage habit is exceptional, making a beautiful clump even when not in bloom. The inflorescence is made of reddish orange bracts outlined with a darker red edge. This is a fairly new introduction to the ginger world but still relatively unknown. It is another great addition to the limited number of available cold hardy Costus hybrids. Further breeding with this hybrid should create some really interesting results.
Grows to 4’ in medium sun, cold hardy in USDA Zones 8 and higher.
